RTE abandons Medium Wave Band

RTE, Ireland closes down its MW transmitters on 567 kHz (Tullamore) and 729 kHz (Cork) on 24th Of March 2008. The Long Wave transmitter on 252 kHz continues broadcasting, however.

    We could be forgiven for hoping that RTE are doing the right thing. AM transmitters are fiendishly inefficient, especially one as old as the Tullamore rig. I think they’re running it at 300kW carrier power in daytime and I believe it eats up somehting like half a million units of electricity every hour. If they can save all that power it will ease pressure on the national grid and hopefully reduce CO2 emissions by a certain amount, however small.
